My dog ate my wallet

My dog grabbed my wallet off a counter top and chewed it to bits, including some currency.

Ungrateful - We walk him all around all day and this is how he repays us.

HBO Special - Hacking Democracy

I've got this queued up on MythTV. I probably should have watched it before I voted this morning.

Digg gets there late but it's still a nice ad.

Back

I'm back to write more info.

Busy day today - ran into problems with an upgrade to ESX 3.0

World Cup 2006

USA has exited the tournament after a poor showing.  How disappointing!

Counting the days

We're going on vacation soon - everybody's excited.  It's been a really long time since I've taken a break.

Xen upgrade

I changed the production box from FC5beta1 to FC5 on Sunday. Now I can use normal Xen kernels. Previously the beta1 Xen snapshot had some kind of binary incompatability so I was forced to use only Fedora binary or hand compiled kernels to run the guests.
It went very well except I didn't know that Fedora minimal install required discs 1 and 2 now so I had to drive home in the middle of the upgrade. Kind of a hassle.

What the heck is wrong with a single disc minimal install?

Webmail

I tried out Roundcubemail - it's an newer webmail IMAP client written in PHP.

It's pretty damn slick for a beta.

I'm going to look into contributing Japanese strings - they aren't in there yet although the client has no issues dealing with Japanese content in UTF-8.

California

Well at least now I remember why I don't want to live in California.

Remember this night - there is no way you could deal with this state.

One more down

We finished the Noida and Long Beach integration yesterday.

Tomorrow we'll get to see how it goes.  I think this was the best job so far but only time will tell ;-)

Queen Mary's

We happened to be in downtown Long Beach today right at the same time as there was a scheduled meeting of the Queen Mary 2 and the Queen Mary.

The Queen Mary is moored at Long Beach permanently while the Queen Mary 2 was scheduled for a curtesy call - they came within about 1/3 of a mile from each other and tooted the horns. It was quite the spectacle and there were many people witnessing it.

Also - in preparation for the Toyota grand prix race in April the barriers were going up to make the street course. It was pretty cool on the way back - there were barriers on both sides of the street - would have made a great picture.

America West

America West dumped us in Phoenix for the night.  Blech!

Fuel

Rats - only 37MPG - I let my nephew drive and he was peeling out so much for hitting 40.

Toyota

I switched from a Honda Civic to a Toyota Corolla this week.  I'm trying to see how high I can get the mpg to go on the Toyota.  Without being careful it easily gets 35+ but I'm hoping to get it into the low forties.

Decisions, Decisions

I learned a valuable lesson this week - never, ever, ask a 3 year old to make a decision if there are more than 2 possible choices.  It's just not fair to them.

Democracy

It was very interesting to watch the events unfold last night during counting for Canadian national elections.

There is nothing like watching a peaceful transition of power happen with dignity and respect from all sides.

So long Linode

I moved the blog from Linode today.  It's been a good run but time to move on.

FC5 Xen

Got FC5beta2 Xen guests working tonight. I got caught by something stupid - the FC5guest kernel xennet support was built as a module. I like to get modules working last but in this case I needed to get them going first, build the initrd, and alias eth0 to xennet in order to get networking started during boot. :-(

2006 arrived on time

The new year is here. I wasn't ready for it. I expected New Year's Eve to be on Sunday for some reason instead of Saturday.

First Day of School

Today was my daughter's first day of school.

It wasn't as hard as I thought it might be. We wrote her name on the blackboard together - she saw the other students' names written there and she wanted to be like them.

When we went to get her after school she asked me, "Can I come here again tomorrow Dad?"

Bad weekend - sick

Happy new year - I've been sick since Friday. It's seems about once a year I get an unbelievable fever including hallucinations. Friday was that day. I spent the afternoon in bed from 3-11pm.

I've always believed this "I only get sick once a year" myth. It'll be interesting to see how that pans out by looking back at this

Saturday was better - spent the day with Emi and Ayaka.

Today (Sunday - New Years Day) - Emi and Ayaka went a party at some friends house. I decided not to go because there are a lot of kids there and I don't want to give this to anybody else. I'm catching up with some Mythtv and getting ready to fix the tv in the basement.
